How We Got Started

Our story begins with a classified ad that was placed in The Ithaca Times. As a graduating art student from Ithaca College in 1995, Kate Wilson was looking to start a career. The timing of the classified looking for a Saddler’s Apprentice couldn’t have been timelier! Kate began her saddlery career the day after graduation and has been working as a Saddler and Saddle Fitter ever since. Several trips have been taken to the UK for further training with some of the industry’s top saddlers and saddle manufacturers.  Dutchess Bridle & Saddle was founded in July 1999 and has been serving the equestrian community since then. Kate attended The Foundations of Saddle Fitting Course in both the UK and the US before earning her certification as a Qualified Saddle Fitter (QSF) through The Society of Master Saddlers (SMS) in 2006. She has also been an invited lecturer for the US based Foundations of Saddle Fitting course sponsored by The Society of Master Saddlers UK. We have also expanded our scope to include Western saddle repair and fitting as the need for such services became apparent. We specialize in major and minor English and Western saddle repairs on all brands of saddles. Kate travels throughout the New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania regions for on-site saddle fitting and adjustment for English and Western saddles.
